New Patients
Weekly Report 26
With it being a good amount of time into the second semester I have gotten into a schedule of having two mentor visits a week. One with my mentor and the other at 1 CP Place. With this schedule I have gotten to see the same patients every week and been able to see their progress towards their goals. However, this past week I got to meet new patients at 1 CP Place as well as my mentor visit. I got to meet four new patients. These new patients range from the age of 3 to 16 and have either cerebral palsy or autism. Let me begin explaining the new things I learned by starting with the new patients at 1 CP Place.
While at 1 CP Place I got to see a patient that had just come back from SDR surgery. As I have mentioned before, SDR surgery is a key component in many CP patients lives due to its positive impact on a patient's ability to regain muscle control and limit dystonia. During my observation of the patient I got to see him do the shuttle, a leg pressing machine, as well as sit to stands. From what I observed I was able to see just how much of a positive difference SDR surgery can have on a patient's progress towards their goals.
During my mentor visit I got to see three new patients. The first one I am going to talk about is a teen with Autism. While watching with Mrs, Darcy work with her I got to see how different it is to treat patients that have such different conditions. I also got to join in on the session by having to stand on a moving swing. The other two patients I got to see were 3 and 13. Both have spastic cerebral palsy along have high muscle tone and both have either a 4 or 5 on the GMFM scale, a world wide scale of the degree of a patient's condition of Cerebral Palsy, however, the older one has enough range of motion in her arms to be able to wheel herself around in her wheelchair. Seeing both patients has affected my perspective of working with kids that have Cerebral Palsy because they completely differ from the patients I see normally. These new patients I got to see sadly will never be able to walk where as the other kids I see will be able to walk.
Overall seeing these new patients has widened the range of kids with different conditions I have observed and the different spectrum of patients with Cerebral Palsy. With the new information I have learned I am confident that I can only learn more and be better prepared to enter into the world of Pediatric Physical Therapy.

Free Toys?!?
Weekly Report 25
This past week in ISM I forced myself to look at all the work I am doing from a different perspective. This new perspective being of an outsider trying to understand how I want my final product to go as well as finding what I truly want to accomplish in my final product. In order to gain this new perspective I had to reflect a lot on my own as well as get the opinions of my ISM teacher, mentor, and other physical therapists. Besides the new perspective I also got to see patients progress in their work towards their goals.
In the previous week I realized my final product was too ambitious and I needed more time to accomplish it. That's why this week i talked to my teacher, Mr. Speice, about what I can do with the work I have already done as well as what I can add onto it in order to reach my true purpose of my final product. This purpose being to make a positive impact on the lives of children with disabilities. While reflecting over the things I have learned in my observations at both clinics I realized a toy drive would accomplish my purpose plus more because kids love toys and these toys can also be used to benefit them in physical therapy. Throughout the end of the week once I had gotten the opinions of my mentor and the other physical therapists about the idea I began to lay out the plans of how I would accomplish my goal.
Besides the work I had accomplished on my final product I also got to observe at both clinics. While at my mentor clinic I got to see extreme growth in one of the patient's ability to support her own weight. For instance I got to see her go from not being able to balance herself while sitting to being able to sit criss cross in the middle of a moving boat swing. By seeing this great improvement I am beginning to realize how much the job really does impact a person's life. Knowing this only makes me more excited to go into the field.
Overall this week has made me only more certain in my decision to become a pediatric physical therapist. It has also allowed me to regain focus for my final product and make the biggest impact I can with the amount of time I have. Next week I hope to see more progress in the patients and also but final touches on my toy drive.

Award for Most Improved
Weekly Report 24
Throughout the past week I have gotten to focus on a lot of important things such as my final product and mentor visits. While focusing on the topic of my final product I had a lot of time to reflect how I wanted to proceed with it. Through this reflection period I realize that I need to rethink my end goal. In order to accomplish my goal of a new final product I had to get the opinion of both my mentor as well as the other physical therapists I have been shadowing.
During my visit with Mrs. Darcy I got to see how much of an improvement one of her patients have made. For instance the patient at first was not able to hold herself up while sitting, however, now she can easily balance herself while sitting on a boat swing. This big improvement has showed me how much of an impact physical therapists have on their patients. Another thing I learned on this visit is that the clinics toys are slowly becoming to “used” for their patients and are becoming ineffective means of motivation. This made me start to think of some ideas for a new final product.
While on my visit at 1 CP Place I got to see just how diverse the world of pediatric physical therapy is. For instance, one of the patients was ukrainian. This led to some language barriers with the parents, however, the child is able to communicate with the therapists easily. This shows just how intelligent the children are even though they may be considered disabled. After the patients were done for the day I began reviewing my final product plan with the physical therapists I shadow at the clinic. With their advice I began to realize that I need way more time than I have in order to pull of my carnival idea. With that in mind I began to think of what was most important to me concerning the impact I want my final product to make.
Overall I head into next week with a lot of questions as well as ideas on how to alter my final product and make the most impact on society with the time I have left. I also have a set in stone schedule with both physical therapy clinics that will give me the optimal time necessary to achieve an optimal observation time.

Setting the date
Weekly Report 2/28-3/12
Man this past two weeks have gone by fast. To start it off I was focused on the main details of my final product. These details include volunteers, activities, and the date. Besides focusing on those three things I also learned a lot from my mentor during our visit. Some of the things I learned about pertain to both my future in the career and my final product. This includes possible charities and sponsors. To end off these past to weeks I took some time for mental health and focused on the creative part of my product.
While focusing on the three main details of my final product, volunteers, activities, and the date, I began to realize I need to get these things in order before I can progress. With these three things in mind i began setting up ways to achieve these main components. In order to get the volunteering stuff all together I began constructing a form the volunteers need to fill out. However, I learned that before I could get my volunteers to do this I first needed to pick a date. While scanning through my calendar I had to find a date that would fit all of my needs. After careful consideration I have two dates in mind. These two are April 22nd or May 20th. Both of these dates work around my extracurricular activities and by having two options I will see which is best for my possible volunteers and sponsors. Once I figured both of those two out I needed to shift my focus to the activities. During one of my thought processes I began to realize that I could group the volunteers and have them come up with activities that I would have previously not thought of.
During my mentor visit with Darcy Rohre we began discussing possible sponsors and charities that could be the focus of my community carnival. This is when I learned about AMBUC, an organization that donates adapted tricycles to patients with Cerebral Palsy. I also learned more about the main charities that support Cerebral Palsy Research. The main one is United Cerebral Palsy. In the upcoming week I hope to have contacted both of these organizations and get their support for my final product.
Lastly to end out the week I decided to destress and focus on the more creative side of my product. This included me adding on and changing my T-shirt design as well as sketching out ideas for possible flyers. My goal is to have both of these things accomplished in two to three weeks time.
Overall these past two weeks have been very important in my expansion of my final product. With more and more details being finalized I am now more positive in my ability to accomplish this great task of putting together an entire carnival.

Noodles and Shawn Mendes
Weekly Report 2/20-2/27
This week I got to work more on my final product. I was also able to go on another visit to 1 CP Place. Over the course of the week I was also conducting some research over the information my mentor gave me.
Concerning my final product, I was able to get two volunteers and began the process of organizing some of the event games. I was also able to bounce ideas off of the therapists at 1 CP Place and get their ideas on what type of events I should do. Some of these events include soccer, basketball, and dancing.
On my visit at 1CP place I got to learn a lot about the process patients with Cerebral Palsy must go through in order to be prepared for surgery. One of the patients I got to see was having his last visit before he has the surgery. While talking to the patient he began to explain to me what the surgery is call SDR, this stands for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy. He then explained that is pretty much is a surgery that affects the neurons around the spin to allow for less muscle tension. Once he has had his surgery he will come back to an intensive physical therapy session where he will come in everyday for some weeks in order to regain muscle tone lost in the previously tight muscles.
Through the research I conducted I got to learn more about the centers of cerebral palsy that were typically up north in the US. One of the best is called Gillette. This place is actually where one of the patients is going in order to have his SDR surgery. I also learned about the different way that this clinic compares to the work I have seen here in Texas. THe main way it differs is in the extent of work they do and the amount of resources they have.
Overall, this week I got to experience a lot of new Cerebral Palsy terms as well as the way that patients improve the most, through SDR surgery. I also worked on my Final Product through both my research, my visits at 1 CP Place, and through my connections in the community. Even though the week went by so fast I was still able to follow along my plan of what to accomplish.

Motivational Pokemon?
Weekly Report 2/13-2/19
Wow this week was a super exciting one. To start off the week I got to continue working out some ideas for my Final Product. In the middle of the week I got to visit a new physical therapy clinic called 1 CP Place. To end off the week I finished my assessment for the week as well as continued to work on my Final Product.
For my final product I have the idea to create a community carnival. In order to achieve this goal I need to get started as quickly as possible and that is what I did. To start it off I began brainstorming activities that children with Cerebral Palsy can accomplish. Some of the activities I am thinking of include a tossing game and possibly a race of some kind. Besides thinking of activities I also started looking for some possible volunteers.
On Wednesday I had the privilege to go shadow at 1 CP Place. While there I got to observe three patients as well as learn about the online program they use at the clinic. While observing I got to learn about how each child is motivated in a different manner. For instance the first patient was motivated through trying to impress the physical therapist, the second patient was motivated through the use of a purple ball, and the last patient was motivated by talking Pokemon with the therapists. This was very interesting to me because it just shows how diverse this job is and how it requires you to stay young at heart. Another thing I learned while observing was the different kinds of orthotics utilized by physical therapists treating children with Cerebral Palsy. These orthotics include AFOs (noodles), SMOs, and Walkers. By observing the way patients walked with and without their orthotics it made it very clear how much of a difference these have in their lives.
Overall this week was a great one because I got to experience a new type of physical therapy clinic and learn a lot of new terms that are vital to my success in this field. Throughout the week I have been successful in my ability to progress towards my final product. However, I am anticipating some obstacles coming soon as I try to get a plethora of volunteers and find a place to host the event.

Community
Weekly Report 2/6-2/12
One word that encompass the way I was feeling this past week would be stressed. To start of the week I had to complete my Product Proposal and Calendar as well as another assessment. By having both of these important assignments in my week I was stressed on how to complete them to the best of my abilities. However, besides feeling stressed I was very excited to visit my mentor again on Wednesday.
To start off the week I had to finalize my rough draft for my Product Proposal and Calendar in order to send it to my mentor so I could get her opinion about it. This added some more stress because I want to show my mentor the passion I have for the field of pediatric physical therapy and I also want to show her all the information I have learned from my research. In finalizing my proposal I realized that I want to incorporate the whole community as well as children with cerebral palsy. I hope to accomplish this through organizing a carnival of some sorts in order to bring the community together and raise awareness for Cerebral Palsy. Later in the week when I meet with my mentor I hope to get her opinion on this.
The most important part of my week encompassed the time I spent with my mentor. During this time I was able to see another one of her patients that has Cerebral Palsy as well as get to talk more with her about my Final Product. While observing her work I learned more about how to work with children as well as the utilization of games in order to improve therapy. After the patient left we went over my Product Proposal and Calendar and came to the conclusion that it is a good idea. However, it will take a lot of work and persistence. With this in mind I will begin my calendar next week and go through its beginning stages. After talking about my product, Mrs. Darcy gave me some resources to research about in order to get a better understanding of Cerebral Palsy for the pamphlet portion of my Final Product. I was also able to get information about the different types of tests utilized by pediatric physical therapists when diagnosing and treating patients.
Overall this week was both stressful and exciting. I was able to get more observing hours with my mentor as well as learn more about Cerebral Palsy. In the next week I hope to continue the research Mrs. Darcy gave me and hopefully meet with a physical therapist for 1CP Place.

First Mentor Visit
Weekly Report 1/30-2/05
This week was an amazing week because I was able to have my first mentor visit with Darcy Rohre. But I'll talk about that later. First off this week I was focused on putting finishing touches on my Original Work and Research Speech. This task nearly consumed my whole week because I find it very difficult to speak in front of people. In order to ease my nervous I rehearsed my speech multiple times in order to get more comfortable with the information. In the first part of the week I thought I had my speech completely thought out, however, I was wrong. This comes back to my first mentor visit. While on my first mentor visit I was able to gain hands on experience while watching my mentor, Darcy Rohre, work with two patients. Both of these patients have cerebral palsy. By watching her work with these kids I was able to apply the knowledge I learned in my original work to the tasks she was doing. In Between patients Darcy and I were able to talk more about each patient's history and how they compare to children with other diseases and/or disabilities.
Overall this week was full of two very different emotions. For most of the week I was nervous and scared about giving my speech in front of my peers however, going on the mentor visit made me ecstatic because I was able to see exactly how the field of physical therapy is able to impact the lives of children. One very promising thing I was talking to my mentor about is this pediatric clinic in plano that specializes in patients with CP and the main doctor there was able to overcome her condition of CP in order to run the clinic. Hopefully in the next few weeks I will be able to visit there and learn more about the condition as a whole.

New Ideas
Weekly Report 1/23-1/29
Over the course of this week I have been able to dedicate a lot of time to look over my Original Work. I first began reflecting over all that I have accomplished for my work and began criticizing it in order to make sure it was just how I wanted it. Even though I did not get to fully accomplished my desired end product I realized that I could adjust it in order to help support an idea I have for a Final Product. This means I will continue to build off the foundation I created in my research in hopes of finding new ways to improve the physical therapy patient process to make it both more comfortable and efficient.
Besides thinking of new ideas for my final product I looked over the flaws in my Original Work. Meaning I reflected over the work I had done and how I could have done it differently. In my own opinion I would say that my work was successful in all parts except for one. The part I was lacking in had to deal with taking all the information I learned and turning it into an example of what physical therapists complete every time they have a new patient. Hopefully I will accomplish this example plus more in my Final Product.
To give the week an overall reflection I would say that my passion for pediatric physical therapy has only grown from all the things I have and am continuing to learning. Hopefully in the following weeks that passion will continue to grow as I focus more on my confidence in speaking in front of others through presenting my original work and research speech.

Showing Off What I Have Learned
Weekly Report 1/16-1/22
This week has been a rush. With the Research Showcase coming up so soon and putting the finishing touches on my Original Work, this week has been very eventful. By practicing my public speaking throughout the first semester I feel more confident in my ability to present my knowledge to the public at the Research Showcase. Even Though I found having to do this very nerve wracking, after the event was over I realized it was not that bad because I knew what I was talking about and all I had to be was calm, confident, and just smile.
Post Research Showcase I took some time to reflect all the things I need to accomplish in this next semester. This includes a lot of involvement with our mentors, so I began trying to set up times when I could speak with my mentor about everything I have learned from my research and build off of that. I am excited to hopefully meet with her soon and discuss everything I have learned from my Original Work and possibly get her input on the subject.
In the end this week was full of a large variety of emotions. At first I was scared and nervous about the showcase but throughout the showcase I became more confident in myself and what I was saying. To end off the week I was feeling excited and ready to begin mentor visits and pursue the career of pediatric physical therapy from a more hands on way than what I was experiencing the first semester through my research. With this in mind I strive to achieve the goals I set in the beginning of the year because those deadlines of coming up sooner rather than later.

Changing Colors
Weekly Report 1/9/17-1/15/17
Throughout this past week I have been stressed about finishing all components of my display board and my original work before the Research Showcase. I have completed many hours of research and gone through multiple board layouts.
Speaking of research I was able to learn more about the layout of treatment plans and evaluation forms. Based off what I have learned I will be able to complete my original work in more detail than before. I also had a conversation with my teacher about my original work. This conversation helped put me back on track, allowing me to become more time efficient in completing my work.
When talking about my display board I would consider myself to be quite indecisive. Halfway through the week I completely switched my color scheme and began my board all over again. I changed my color scheme from all blues to one with light teal, teal, gold, and black. Once I changed my color scheme I had to decide on the layout of all of my pieces of research. Through deciding on a new layout I realized what information was most important to me to display on the board. This information includes my mission statement, my quote, my topic proposal, one of my research assessments concerning Cerebral Palsy, and a QR code to my digital portfolio. Once I had all my information picked I had to decide which way would be best to organize it in a professional manner that also supported my indualize style. After figuring out a layout I realized that I wanted to add something special to my board to make it stand out. I decided to have a custom sticker of my quote made. This sticker will add uniqueness to my board because it is custom made by KeeneFX.
Through reflecting this weekend I have come to the conclusion that even though my week was chaotic and stressful I would not have done it any other way because it has allowed me to complete both my display board and original work they way I want it. However, I am still nervous about the Research Showcase as a whole because I have never done something like this before.

How to Be Aesthetically Pleasing
Weekly Report 1/02-1/08
Throughout the week I have focused more and more on my original work by going through different articles concerning the treatment of patients with cerebral palsy as well as comparing and contrasting different forms of evaluation for patients receiving physical therapy. After gaining this new knowledge I began my rough draft of my original work in hopes of perfecting the first two portions, the evaluation form and a list of pros and cons for different types of treatments, before speaking with my mentor. While working on my evaluation sheet I realized that the most important part about the form is really the patient's history and goals. These are the most important becuase once you know the patient's diagnosis, Cerebral Palsy, there is not much you can do to solve the condition becuase it is caused by irreversible brain damage. Therefore the best thing you can do for the patient is to help them achieve their goals. By having this knowledge I will be able to complete my goal of finishing my Original Work in the following week.
Another focus of my week was creating my Research Showcase Display Board. This task proved to be quite difficult because I am very detail oriented person and find it hard to decide on one layout over another. By looking at differing layouts completed by previous ISM students I was able to create a variety of options to choose from. After choosing a few of the options I decided to compare and contrast them in order to see which one fits better with my color scheme and my profession. By the end of the process I was still unable to make a final decision so my goal for next week is to find the layout that best fits my study this year and begin to put it in order. Hopefully it will be as aesthetically pleasing as I am wanting it to be.

Recharging and Progressing
Weekly Report 12/12-1/1
Over the past few weeks I have worked on a great deal of ISM assignments. For instance I completed two interviews with professionals in the field of physical therapy. During these two interviews I was able to find a mentor that is the best fit for me. From the interviews with my mentor I have learned a lot about the process of evaluating patients as well as the different type of treatments given to patients. My mentor, Darcy Rohre, will be able to give me vital advice that will assist me in completing my original work. This vital advice being how to think in a creative manner in order to get the patient to accomplish what you need to get done. Besides talking to my mentor about my original work I also looked at a few more articles concerning the treatment of patients with cerebral palsy. Based off the articles I have read I have gotten a deeper understanding of the process and therapies used to treat the three different kinds of cerebral palsy.
Overall these past few weeks have been a success in my ability to find a mentor as well as my continuous growth in knowledge surrounding the condition, cerebral palsy. However, I did come across a few obstacles mostly pertaining to my problem with procrastination. However, I am working on overcoming the problem entirely. My goals for next week include completing my original work and setting up a mentor visit.
Working off the book
Weekly Report 12/05-12/11
This week in ISM we worked on a plethora of things that all have the same goal of preparing us for the research showcase. First we worked more on our original work and conducted more interviews.
For the first part of the week I read more articles about Cerebral Palsy and the types of treatment they receive. I also learned more about the different variations of CP and how each case is different from the rest.
During this week I also had an interview with a PT at UT Southwestern. This interview was very beneficial because I learned more about the educational programs and the benefits of specializing. For instance I learned about a different program that colleges offer that would allow me to get business or social working experience to better myself for the future if I was to choose to run my own pt clinic. Another thing I learned has to deal with the idea of specializing and going through residencies. What I learned is that they are not necessary, however, they give you more experience and better prepare you for future jobs.
Overall this week was a success becuase I was able to expand my knowledge on the condition, Cerebral Palsy, as well as gain more experience and advice from physical therapists. Some obstacles I faced this week was trying to stay focused. Even Though this program is getting ready to gear up to be more stressful right now it is not that bad. Meaning I catch myself procrastinating when I should not be. However, I overcome this problem by getting myself back on task whenever I notice that I am day dreaming. My goal for next week is to hopefully find a mentor.

Finding more interviews
Weekly Report 11/21-12/04
This week in ISM I really picked up my game. I began contacting more professionals in the field of physical therapy, specifically pediatric physical therapy. I also began working more on my original work by looking at different articles that correlate with the condition of Cerebral Palsy. Lastly I worked on my guest list and invitation for the ISM Research Showcase.
In order to expand the number of professionals I have communicated with I decided to make a few changes. I wrote and sent twelve emails to professionals that were specialized in pediatric physical therapists. After sending those emails I decided to make a few cold calls. My goal was to complete six cold calls by the end of the week and I was able to complete it before Thursday. Additionally I was able to set up an interview for next Wednesday with a physical therapists at UT Southwestern.
For my Original Work I looked more into the therapies associated with the condition. These therapies were very intriguing because I was unaware of the benefits they can provide for patients. I hope to learn more about different kinds of treatments that aren’t already used for Cerebral Palsy and see if they should be implemented into the patient's treatment plan.
While working on my guest list and invitation for the Research Showcase I realized a few things. I wanted to make sure that every person who has impacted my life, either in a positive or a negative manner, was in invited. I did it this way because I have learned something from every single one of them. Whether it was them telling me to double knot my shoes or another person telling me I was not good enough. All of these influences have made me who I am and I want to let them all know that I have become a stronger and more confident person because of them. In Regards to my invitation I created it in a way that matched both my topic and color scheme.
Overall, this week was a good week because I was able to complete all of my goals and get more work done my Original work than I already had planned. Some obstacles I had to overcome would be my procrastination for calling professionals, however, I powered through by making small goals that when put together made my week a success.

How to Impact the World
Weekly Report 11/07-11/13
This week in ISM we worked on giving our research and introduction speech as well as work on our original work proposal. Through working on these assignments I was able to gain more experience in talking in front of my peers and decide in which direction I want to drive my research.
Through presenting my research and introduction speech I was able to work on how presentation skills; including working on my confidence, my voice fluctuation, and less fidgeting. Some obstacles I had to overcome have to deal with my fear of public speaking. However, I am slowly overcoming this problem through practicing and presenting more in front of my peers. I am confident that by the end of this year my fear will be under control enough to where I will not show it while presenting.
Another obstacle I overcame this week was my Original Work Proposal. I had difficulty completing this because I could not figure out what I wanted to base it on. However, through reflecting on my research assessments and the different interviews I have conducted I realized I wanted to focus on pediatrics, and one of the main diseases these patients have is cerebral palsy. Knowing this I came up with the proposal to learn more about the disease and create a treatment plan for a patient that has the disease.
Overall this week was a success because I was able to give my speech with great improvement when compared to my first speech. I was also successful in creating my original work proposal. Some questions I still have going into the next week have to deal with the what I need to know in order to complete my original work. I hope to have a few of these questions answered by the end of thanksgiving break.

The slow week
Weekly Report 10/31-11/6
This week in ISM was a slow week. We were not introduced any new assignments besides the normal interview assessment. This worked in my favor because I already had this interview completed in the previous week. In order to be successful this week I made a few cold calls and wrote some emails to different professionals in hopes of talking with more physical therapists that specialize in sports and pediatrics. Some questions I still have from this week would be how to organize my original work proposal. Even though this was not due at the end of the week I went ahead and got started thinking of different ideas. Some ideas I had include possibly raising a fundraiser for raising awareness about pediatric diseases and their treatment as well as organizing a pamphlet about genetic disorders in pediatrics that affect their range of motion. Another thing I did this week to get ahead was work on my research speech. This was a hard task because I could not figure out how to word my speech without sounding redundant.
Overall my calls went quite well and I was able to get an email address for a physical therapist wanting to set up an interview. Some obstacles I had to overcome would be not procrastinating. Due to the fact that there wasn’t many assignments due at the end of the week it made it easier to slack off. However, my perseverance helped me push through this idea of procrastinating and become more productive. I was able to complete my assignments in a timely manner and prepare for my week to come.

The importance of Physics
Weekly Report 10/24-10/30
This week in ISM we work on a layout for our display boards, conducted more interviews, and began another research assessment. The most successful part of my week was conducting my two interviews and cold calling six more professionals.
For display boards we had to create an outline for it as well as plan on what information we want to include and choose a color scheme that would best fit both our personality and subject of study.
During the week I conducted two interviews. My first one was on the phone with Avari Garcia, who gave me vital information on working in a clinic as well as about what it is like to play sports while in college. My second interview of the week was in person with Charles Ferruzza. He gave me crucial information concerning different styles of pt programs and what it is like to work with patients that have sports related injuries. Overall, both interviews gave me important information about how physical therapy can differ depending on what patients you work with and where you work. For instance at the clinic Avari works at she typically sees 16 to 26 patients a day and Charles typically sees eight patients a day. By knowing this information I will be able to make a more educated decision later in life about the type of place I want to work. A few interesting things I learned from these two physical therapists have to deal with college education and continual education. For instance, Charles mentioned that the most important class he took in college was Physics because it is a basic foundation that makes it easier to understand kinesiology, what he described as physics of the human body. By knowing this it will help me become more motivated to completely understand the physics that I am learning this year in AP physics, that way I will be more prepared for college. Avari gave me some important information about continual education, for instance she mentioned that in order to specialize you must take extra classes outside of college and in order to keep practicing you must take 30 hours of classes every two years. This will help me realize just what kind of job I am getting myself into and allow me to be prepared for the road ahead.
For my Research Assessment I learned about Ultrasound Therapy. This idea came to me from my two interviews. With Avari, she talked about the importance of Ultrasound imaging and how it could possibly change the way physical therapy is done. However, with Charles, he talked about how ultrasound therapy lacks the scientific back up it needs to prove that it works. This intrigued me because ultrasound was being used in two different ways and I wanted to see which way was best. In order to do so I split it into two different assessments. The first one focusing on Ultrasound therapy and the second focusing on ultrasound imaging. That way I can get a good understanding of which one is more promising in the field of physical therapy.
Overall, this week was successful because I was able to learn more about physical therapy education and compare two different places physical therapist work. Some obstacles I had to overcome would have to deal with keeping up with the cold calls. I started the week off strong by making six calls on Monday, but the rest of the week I did not make a single call. I will fix this problem next week my reminding myself to make at least 2 calls every other day.

Stop It
Weekly Report 10/17-10/23
This week in ISM we wrote thank you letters, conducted more interviews, and created our portfolios. One of the main focus of the week was to continue calling professionals and learn more about our field of study. We accomplished this through our research and interview assessments. Another thing we did this week was watch videos about procrastination. This was very important because it will affect the way I work in this class the rest of the year.
For our thank you letters we wrote to people from the ISM Business Symposium and people that we interviewed. By writing these letters we practiced our writing skills as well as showed our appreciation to the professionals for taking time out of their day to help us.
This week I had my second interview with an athletic trainer from Frisco ISD. The interview allowed me to learn more about treating sports injuries as well as what is it like to work with student patients rather than older patients. I also learned a lot about the education system surrounding athletic training and how it compared to the education requirements for physical therapists. For instance, both programs have a heavy concentration of courses in the sciences. They also share similar courses such as anatomy and physiology as well as biology and physics. Knowing this I was able to get her opinion on the courses and how I should best prepare for them. This will help me in my future experiences in the physical therapy program.
In order to learn more about the subdivisions in pediatric physical therapy I chose to focus my research assessment on the pros and cons of sports pt vs neurological pt. During my research I learned about the type of patients each one works with as well as the type of techniques they implement when treating patients. This information will allow me to make a decision on which division I will want to go into. Based off of my research I still do not know which division I want to go into. Each have their perks and so I will not decide until I have conducted interviews with people in each profession.
Lastly, the videos about procrastination helped me realize just how big of a impact it has on my work rate. For instance, it allowed me to visualize how I get distracted from work and how to get back on task. Now that I know how I get distracted and how I justify getting off task, I will implement that into how I work throughout the rest of the year. I will work on tasks in set time increments so that I will not be doing work last minute.
Overall this week was successful because I was able to expand my knowledge on pediatric physical therapy and its divisions. As well as conduct my second interview and gain knowledge about athletic training. Some obstacles I had to overcome this week came from trying to conduct my second interview. I began procrastinating my work which led me to have to finish everything right before the deadline. To overcome this obstacle I will begin working on my assignments earlier and not last minute. The videos we watched this week led to my success in overcoming my obstacles and allowing me to start of the next week ahead of the game.
Being calm and confident
Weekly Report 10/10-10/16
This week in ISM we worked on our portfolio and assessments. To begin the week we finished our previous weekly report and were introduced to the topic proposal. Another thing done this week was an interview. I conducted my first professional interview with a physical therapist. After this interview I started my research and interview assessments.
First we worked on our portfolio, both digital and hard copy. To start off we had to look over all of our turned in work and fix all the errors that were pointed out in the comments made by Mr. Speice. Then we had to copy and paste it into our website under its own tab. We also had to print out all of our work so that we could place it into our clear dividers and into our binder. By having both a digital and hardcopy binder we will be able to have multiple platforms at which we can share our portfolio with professionals.
Next we worked on our topic proposal. This was easy because I already had an occupation in mind. I know that I want to mentor with a Physical Therapist, specifically a pediatric physical therapist. I figured this out through my research assessments and through my interview. In order to completely fill out the proposal I took a personality test. This test revealed to me that I am an “Advocate”. Meaning I have a personality that is both selfless and have a good sense of morality. This personality will fit well with the topic I have chosen for my study.
During the middle of the week there was an interview with a physical therapist. This was a very successful interview becuase I gained a lot of knowledge about what it is like to work in a pt clinic and what pt school is like. I was able to gain a lot of information about the questions I had from all of my previous research assessments as well as the question created for the interview. Another thing I was able to do at my interview was expand my network. The physical therapist was kind enough to help me find a pediatric physical therapist nearby so that they could answer some of the questions she was not able to.
After my interview I began to work on both assessments. For the interview assessment I went into great detail about the new knowledge I gained as well as how I became acquaintances with the professional. It was the new information from the interview that sparked my topic for my next research assessment. My topic was pediatric physical therapy. I looked into the type of work they did, the type of patients they work with, and some different clinics that specialized in pediatric physical therapy. Some questions I still have would be which pediatric physical therapy clinic in North Texas would be the best? I still have this question because all the ones that I was looking at were in locations other than Texas.
Overall this week was successful because I was able to build more of my portfolio and commit to one topic. As well as conduct my first interview and finish both of my assessments in a timely manner. Some obstacles I overcame have to deal with the interview because at first I was very nervous, however, over the span of conducting the interview I became more calm and confident in my speaking. Some questions I still have pertain to the difference in pediatric pt clinics and which state would be the best to work in if I become a pediatric physical therapist.

Making a Network
Weekly Report 10/3-10/9
This week in ISM we attended the ISM Business Symposium and completed our SMARTER goals. To begin the week we had to prepare ourselves for the business symposium by going over protocol and attire. This helped us to be more prepared for networking and the mock interviews.
During the ISM Business Symposium we had to do mock interviews. While conducting the mock interviews I was able to have three separate people look over my resume and give me advice on how to improve it. The main improvement they had all together was to put a description under the awards that I have received so that they could know what the award was about without having to ask me. Another thing we learned from the mock interviews was how to be calm and confident while talking to professionals. This lesson was learned as a result of an obstacle. I found it difficult to talk to the professionals because I am not an outgoing person. However, I overcame the obstacle and was able to learn some very important information. For instance, while conducting one of the interviews I learned that it might be easier to be a part of sports in college and still get work done, then if I was not a part of it. I was told that being in a sport gives you more of a structure to which you can get all of your work done in a timely manner. This would be very beneficial for the program I am wanting to be a part of because of the large course load.
Another part of the Business Symposium was networking. While networking I met an alumni from one of the colleges that I wish to attend. This professional said he would help me get into the college if I needed any form of recommendation and he also mentioned his connections with the women's soccer coach at the school. This is the most beneficial knowledge I learned at the Symposium because it gives me all the tools I need to have a successful college career. Besides getting this very important information, I also got to practice talking to professionals in a calm and confident manner. I met lots of professionals from different vocations.
The last parts of the Business Symposium included talking to alumni and listening to a professional speaker. While talking to the alumni I learned a lot about how important being in this program is. For instance, they told us how being in this program gave them a head start in their career. They also talked about how this class allowed them to realize they do not want to be in a certain career. This advice will assist me throughout the year by giving me a reason to keep working hard even when the times get tough. The professional speaker gave a speech about being a better you. This speech gave me a lot of motivation for putting more effort and work into the class so I can reap a larger reward.
Finally after the ISM Business Symposium we worked on our SMARTER goals. For the assignment we had to create three goals that fit the requirements we learned last week. The three goals that I created were based off of calling more professionals and conducting more interviews, as well as learning the basics performed by Physical Therapist. These goals were explained in more depth in my SMARTER goals document.
Overall, this week was successful because I learned a lot of important information about balancing college courses and college sports. As well as creating my own network of professionals who can help me with my future. Some obstacles I overcame include going out of the way to talk to professionals in order to make my own network of professionals. However, I overcame the obstacle through perseverance and strength. Next week I will have my first interview and begin working on my topic proposal.

Calls after Calls
Weekly Report 9/26-10/2
This week in ISM we covered many topics. We focused on calling professionals, starting our portfolios and beginning our SMARTER goals. To begin the week we finished up our first check on the call correspondence list. This meant that we had to have already made some calls and schedule interviews. By having that check early in week it allowed for a more productive rest of the week.
For instance, I was able to call three more professionals in the field of physical therapy. During these three calls I was able to work on being calm and confident as well as attain new information. Some new things I learned include what time physical therapists leave their office, the times at which physical therapists are most busy, and when it is best to call a physical therapist. In the upcoming week I will have my first interview with a physical therapist. I have a few questions regarding how to keep the conversation flowing and how to keep it informational as well as casual. I will answer these questions with the help of my teacher and other students.
Another thing we did this week was setting up our portfolios. We set up both our online and paper portfolios. To set up our online portfolio we had log back into the website we created earlier in the year and begin making it more personalized and start moving our weekly reports and research assessments into their different tabs. To set up our paper portfolio we had to get a binder and dividers that fit our color scheme. In order to even do this I had to decide what color scheme would work best for my personality and profession. After researching different color schemes I decided on one with a variety of tints and shades of blue. This will be aesthetically pleasing and represent my calm nature. After getting the binder we were taught how to set up the binder with the dividers.
Finally at the end of the week we learned about SMARTER goals. SMARTER goals is an acronym for the process in which we should go through when creating goals for ourselves in the ISM program. The S stands for specific, meaning the goal can not be vague. The M stands for measurable, meaning that the goal has to have a way in which you can prove that something has been accomplished. The A stands for Agreed upon, meaning the goal must be approved. The R stands for realistic, meaning that the goal is not so outrageous that it can not be accomplished. The T stands for time-based, meaning how much time are you giving yourself to accomplish this goal. The last two letters were added on the original acronym in order to make it more specific to ISM. The last two letter, E and R, stand for ethical and recorded. This connects back ISM because when working in the field of Physical Therapy ethics are a very important part of the job. Recorded also connects back to ISM because one of the main parts of the class is to record everything that we do so it can be placed into our portfolio and show how much we have grown.
Overall this week I felt successful in my work with cold calling and my ability to choose a color scheme that fits my personality. Some obstacles I faced this week would have to come from making the cold calls. Even though I was successful, I still find it nerve-racking to call professionals and have to deal with waiting for a call back that never comes. Some questions I still have for next week include how to best prepare for an interview and how should I go about my next research assessment?

What is the Structure for life?
Weekly Report 9/19-9/25
This week in ISM we covered many topics. Some things we learned Bloom's Taxonomy, worked on our resumes, and called professionals in our field. To begin the week we finished our last research assessment for the six weeks and began moving more into a self paced course. I liked this change because it allowed me to be more successful in gaining new knowledge through my phone calls with professionals.
Bloom's Taxonomy is a triangle chart that organizes the way thinkers organize their knowledge. This new knowledge will help with the Research Assessment because it explains how much information of each topic should be included in order to have an informative and reflective Research Assessment. The categories that are in this chart are remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create. Based off the taxonomy and the instruction from Mr. Speice we should focus more on the create, evaluate, and analyze more so than the remember and understand.
In the previous week we created a rough draft of our resumes. This week we worked on fixing all the little mistakes and making sure that our resume was organized and professional. Some changes I made to my resume consisted of little things like changing the spacing and double checking my spelling. This will help us when we are at attending all ISM events because without a good resume it becomes increasingly difficult to go far in the professional world.
One thing I found challenging this week was making phone calls. I was very nervous to the idea of making a phone call with a total stranger. However, I overcame the fear by having a good support system. With my system with me I made my first call to a professional and had a positive response. This boosted my confidence and I continued on making two more phone calls. In these two calls I was able to get two email addresses as well as the reassurance that they would call me back. Later that evening I was given a call back. During this call I was able to speak to the PT herself and learn more about the job of a physical therapist. For instance the different benefits of working with someone at an inpatient clinic versus an outpatient clinic. Also at the end of the call I was able to set up my first interview for Tuesday October 4th.
Overall, this week I overcame the challenge of calling professionals and learning how to overcome the obstacle of not getting a call back. I was successful in getting an interview and remaining calm while on the phone. Some things I still need to work on next week would be to call more professionals and get more interviews scheduled. I also want to look more into the physical therapists who work with FC Dallas, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Dallas Stars to see if they would be good potential mentors. In addition to researching more into that subject I would also want to do more research on the benefits of working in a clinic versus working with a sports team.

Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.
Weekly Report 9/12-9/18
This week in ISM we covered many topics. Some of the things we learned about include growth mindsets, how to create a resume, and new research topics. Before working on these topics I had to create a more professional demeanor. In order to do so I created a professional voicemail and attained clothing that fit the professional dress code. In addition to these two things I also practiced making cold calls in order to prepare for calling mentors in class the following week.
In class we watched a TED talk about the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. This was very intriguing because it showed the importance of praising hard work and not talent. It also brings to light how important it is to work hard if you want to move forward in life. This can be used not only in school, but in both sports and daily life. Being able to focus on working hard and not getting discouraged will help me not only be able to persevere through AP classes, but it will also prepare me for the entrance into the professional world.
Next we learned about the basics of resume and began building our resumes. Some things we learned include format and topics to include. The resume should fit on one page and references should be put on a separate page that can be given upon request. In a resume we are not to include our address and only include information that is applicable to our desired field. We also learned that you should only include the most up to date information.
Finally we worked on our Research Assessment. This week's focus was on education and the courses required in order to attain a DPT. During the research I learned more about the six year DPT program and what it entails. While going through this information I also looked at the different colleges that offered this program. A few of them were Husson University, Springfield University, Wingate University, and Pacific University. These are the four with the best programs to fit my needs. However, I realized that I still need to learn more about these colleges and how they compare to each other in terms of job opportunities and what makes them stand out from each other.
Overall, I felt successful in my ability to create a professional demeanor, finish my work in a timely manner, and formulate a well rounded resume. However, I did run into a few challenges. I didn’t feel comfortable making my cold calls so I decided to postpone it to the next week. I will overcome this obstacle by practicing more and talking to more adults on a regular basis. Next week there will be a greater focus on the work done by a physical on a daily basis in the research assessment. This will be accomplished through calling mentors and interviewing them as well as through the research done on the internet. Some questions that still need answers would be which program would be most beneficial to specializing in either pediatrics, sports, or neurology? Or would it even affect the specialization?

Looking for Professionals
Weekly Report 9/5-9/11
This week in ISM we accomplished multiple goals. The first goal was to find 25 different physical therapists that would be good candidates for being a mentor. During this task I found many different therapists in the area. Most of them were in either Frisco, Plano, or Allen. The criteria I used in order to pick my candidates were they had to be affiliated with Physical Therapy and they had to have their doctorate in Physical Therapy. The mentors I am most excited about talking to would probably be someone from the FC Dallas Baylor team and Avari Garcia.
The next goal to be accomplished in class was to create fifteen questions to ask our possible mentors when interviewing them. This one was a little more challenging parts of the week because my questions needed to give me the most information as possible so that I can make an educated decision when choosing a mentor. I felt successful in my ability to come up with quality questions even though it took me awhile to get started.
The next goal was to learn about professional dress. We learned that while meeting someone in a professional manner our clothes give off the first impression. We also learned that our shoes give off an impression on what our personality type is. Whether we pay attention to detail and if we care about the little things or not.
Another goal we had was to learn how to make a cold call. We were given a script to which we should use while calling possible mentors. This script is what will help us learn how to talk with professionals. We then practiced making the calls with our classmates by going through different scenarios. This practice is what will prepare us to make calm and confidant phone calls so our future mentors will take us seriously. This is something that I will need to continue to work on throughout the week because I am lacking the confidence necessary to make a phone call with a professional.
Our final goal was to create another research assessment. This assessment would dive deeper into our research to give us more information on Physical Therapy so we can have a deeper knowledge and be more prepared to have in depth conversations with our future mentors. The main things I focused on was advancements and specialties. I learned more about the use of prosthetics and what role a physical therapist plays in helping people with prosthetics. I also learned which specialities of physical therapy I am most intrigued by. These include neurological, orthopedic and pediatric. In my next Research Assessment I hope to dive deeper into the terminology of a physical therapist and the different duties they perform on a daily basis.
Overall, I felt like this week was a success because I was able to accomplish all my assignments in a timely manner and was able to learn more about what it means to be a professional. Some things I found challenging was the cold calls, but I hope to improve that skill in the next few weeks. Some questions I still have would be about the type of shoes that would be considered professional and how to improve my cold calling skills.

What to Expect
Weekly Report 8/22-9/4
In these first two weeks of ISM we covered lots of information. During the first week of school we attended the ISM class three times. Over the span of that week we learned a lot about the course and public speaking. The first thing we did was write of a mission statement and select a quote that will be our focus point for the whole year. Then we watched multiple videos including a TED talk about public speaking and the use of power posing. These videos will be applied into my daily work in ISM because it will help me be more confident in public speaking. Next we started writing our introductory speech. While writing this speech I was able express my passion for my field of study. I also got to work on my public speaking skills while rehearsing. This week was a success because I was able to get all of my work done in a timely manner and was able to find a quote that suit my needs. Overall this first week I learned a lot about the expectations of the course and tips on how to speak in front of people. These experiences will help me throughout the year because it will set the foundation for the rest of the year in ISM.
During the next week we attended the ISM class twice. On Tuesday we worked on multiple things. For the first part of class we worked on rehearsing our speeches as well as power posing in order to increase our confidence in public speaking. In the second part of class we presented our introductory speeches to the class and got to work on our digital portfolios. Some adversity I faced this week would include missing class on Thursday due to a cross country meet for the school. This put me at a disadvantage because we were assigned our Research Assignment in class. However, I overcame it by working on my Research Assignment outside of class so that I could get it done in a timely manner. While working on this assignment I learned a lot about my field of study, Physical Therapy. I learned about some new advancements in the field. These advancements include the use of “rehabilitation robots”, virtual reality (“CAREN”), and “Ekso suit”. These advancements gave me a few ideas for what I may want to do as my end of the year project. I also learned more about the different terminology used by Physical Therapists. I felt successful this week because I was able to stand in front of my peers and give my speech. Another success would include my ability to create a webpage that fits my desired look and appeals. Some questions I still have from this week spur from my want for more information about the new advances and how their trials will pan out in the future. Overall this week I learned a lot about my field of interest and about how much I still need to improve my public speaking skills. However, there are a few things that I need to work on. This includes my time management and utilization of class time. Lastly there are a few things that I still want to learn about. These things connect back to my Research Assignment. I want to know more about what the different college courses entail. For instance how the clinical rotations will work and if they will be a daily or weekly occurrence.
